Monday 16th May - Wednesday 1st June
9am - 5pm weekdays
10am - 4pm Saturdays

We are delighted that the Gallery at Woodend will be hosting work by the artists Mary Hellawell and Shirley Doyle. Showing work in in a variety of medium including oil, watercolour, enamel and ceramics, this exhibition will resonate with visitors who have a love of the landscape and the coastal region of Yorkshire. Through their work both artists examine the changing landscape and the effects the unfolding seasons, whether beach, moorland, village or town. The exhibition will be rich in texture, colour and light.

Mary Hellawell lives in Scarborough and trained at the Scarborough School of Art between 1954 and 1959. She then went on to study at the Hornsey College of Art between 1959 and 1960. In addition, Mary completed a BA Hons from the Open University in 1984. Mary went on to teach in London and Germany.

Shirley Doyle was born in Brighton, moved to Bridlington, then Scarborough. She has lived near the sea for most of her life. Shirley says of her work: ”My work is inspired and influenced by my observations of plants and the sea, by its movement and also reflections in the water when calm. I use white stoneware clay when creating my wavescapes and seascapes, mixing other coloured clays and under glaze colours, to get texture, creating movement and moods. I use the same technique with my reflections”.
